Dopo un naufragio tre passeggeri di una nave riescono a raggiungere una solitaria isola dove in un castello vive il sadico conte Zaroff (Leslie Banks), che li invita a restare per servirsene come prede in una terribile battuta di caccia all'uomo. Ma anche uno dei naufraghi, Bob Rainsford (Joel McCrea), è un cacciatore provetto, e insieme a una ragazza (Fay Wray) cercherà di sopravvivere a tutti i costi... Diretto dalla coppia Pichell-Schoedsack (un anno prima di "King Kong"), "Caccia fatale" (noto anche come "La pericolosa partita") è un film dalle inquietanti atmosfere con ambigui riflessi sadiani, una delle grandi pellicole del 'cinema del terrore', ben assecondata da un montaggio pregevole e da ottimi interpreti (su tutti Leslie Banks). Molti degli artefici di questo film si ritrovarono di lì a un anno a realizzare il primo leggendario "King Kong". Di "Caccia fatale" vanno infine segnalati i numerosi remake, da "Game of Death" di Robert Wise del 1946 a "La preda umana" di Roy Boulting del 1956.
