New areas for focus include: the role of talk in learning maths; the applications and use of ICT in maths; creativity in maths; assessment for learning and self assessment; and, suggested resources for teachers. Children's understanding is explored in key areas of mathematics, at reception, infant and junior levels. Important principles and teaching approaches are identified, including the use of calculators and computers. There is an emphasis on mental mathematics and problem solving, an exploration of key issues raised by the Williams review (2008), while classroom case studies show how these teaching approaches are put into practice and how children respond to them.Emphasising the importance of teachers' own mathematical knowledge this book provides students, NQTs and practising teachers with the background to teach mathematics to children aged 3-11.
