I Wonder how many of the children who will read these pages have known the delight of exchanging town for country life ! It may have been for a week or for a month that they have left behind them streets and shops and gas-lamps, and have found themselves transplanted among green lanes and pleasant fields, and all sorts of farmhouse or country-house delights; or it may have been only for a day that they have had a deep draught of meadow air and hill scenery; but I am quite sure the town children will bear me witness that a day or a week or a month in the country has been put away in heart and memory as something more precious than words can describe. At least, so it has been if their hearts and memories are like mine, or if their enjoyment of such a change is at all approaching to that with which, many years ago, we started forth from our house in a certain Lansdowne Crescent, in a town of which I will not tell the name, lest it should think me ungrateful, and wished it good-bye with the one cry from our lips, ' Hurrah for the country! To-morrow we shall wake up in the country !' We were five brothers and sisters then; and I need hardly tell you what had been our feelings as we prepared for a three months' visit to a country parsonage: oi the many consultations we had held as to what we should do when we arrived at Aylston: as to whether there would be a swing: whether we should have gardens of our own: whether there would be a fruit garden: whether we should get blackberries. whether we should find an arbour in which to take the tea out of doors: whether, in short, all our fondly-cherished hopes would or could be realized ?
